Steel milling: a definition

Steel milling refers to the production process of working with workshop machine tools.

With this process it is possible to process metallic materials such as steel, aluminium, brass, as well as plastic material as ABS, POM, nylon, peek and other plastic materials on request.

Technologies and fields of application

In our workshop we can produce prototypes and pre-series with steel milling with 3, 4 and 5 axis machining centres.

The industrial sectors that mostly use this material due to its characteristics and performance are the automotive, chemical, energy production, chemical, pharmaceutical, food and even medical industries.

Steel milling model

Our experience is mainly linked to the steel milling of small-sized products, this is because we do not carry out carpentry work and we are specialized in the milling of steel through mechanical workshop processes.

Compared to aluminium, steel is a stronger, heavier material and costs less.

For these reasons we can say that in products where weight is not a critical element, steel tends to be used to optimize production costs.

To complete the analysis, however, other elements must be considered:

  • Workability of the material: element that affects times and costs. Steel is a very hard metal, more so than aluminium: this element affects production costs because it is necessary to use suitable tools and provide a tool path suited to the material;

  • Size of the piece: if the part is small in size, the cost of the material will be of little importance;

  • Complexity of the geometry: the more complex the piece, the greater the cost difference will be for its creation with two different materials.

These are the main elements analyzed for the choice of material.

Obviously in products where lightness is fundamental, the analysis and weight of each element must be commensurate with the objective to be achieved.

First of all, stainless steel avoids the risk of contamination; furthermore it is durable, resistant to corrosioneasy to clean and maintain over time.

Unlike common steels, it contains chromium; when this element exceeds 10.5% a protective oxide layer is created which preserves the surface of the metal from any chemical agent, as well as from humidity and salinity.

This is the main reason why this material is widely used for the production of medical devices, prosthetic solutions, and related surgical instruments.

It is a biologically neutral material: the colour, smell and flavor of the foods or substances with which it comes into contact remain unaltered.

For this reason the use is also very wide in the household appliance sector such as coffee machines, ice cream machines, food processing machines, all sectors in which we manage numerous productions.

Our service always includes the feasibility check of the pieces based on the files sent by the customer.

For the milling of steel parts, as well as for all mechanical processing, we always ask for the 3D file to analyze the geometry of the piece.

The 2D drawings are fundamental for all indications on specific tolerances and subsequent processing such as threading, degree of roughness and treatments.

On all productions carried out in our workshop we can carry out dimensional checks with related measurement reports via optical scanning.

We can also carry out surface treatments such as chrome plating and galvanization which are the most common ones.
